Very widely distributed in temperate regions on the Southern Hemisphere, found around New Zealand and the Southern Coasts of Australia, South Africa and South America. Not related to the tropical Barracoutas.
Dark blue back, silver sides and belly, And smooth skin. Can be distinguished from the related gemfish by a single lateral line.
Widespread in New Zealand coastal waters, abundant in some localities, with main grounds around the South Island to depths of 200m. Caught mainly by trawling, and available all year round. A very large resource capable of an annual yield of about 20,000-40,000 tonnes.
